National Good Neighbor Day

“As our Nation struggles to build friendship among the peoples of this world, we are mindful that the noblest human concern is concern for others. Understanding, love and respect build cohesive families and communities…For most of us, this sense of community is nurtured and expressed in our neighborhoods where we give each other an opportunity to share and feel part of a larger family…I call upon the people of the United States and interested groups and organizations to observe such day with appropriate ceremonies and activities.” – Becky Mattson

5 Ways to Be A Good Neighbor

Introduce Yourself

Say hello to your neighbors and introduce yourself. Make new neighbors feel welcome by bringing over a glass of wine or a sweet treat. Also, do what you can to remember your neighbors names next time you see them.

Offer Your Help

Offer to check your neighbor’s mail while they are on vacation, mow the lawn of an elderly neighbor, walk their dog while they are away, or water their plants. Not only will you be helping them, but they will feel inclined to return the favor!

Respect One Another’s Boundaries

If you share fence lines with your neighbors, make sure you are considering your neighbor’s interests. If you have a dog, make sure the fence is secure so they can’t run off.
If you have kids, make sure they aren’t hanging or jumping over the fence into your neighbors space.

Include Your Neighbors

Remember your neighbors when you are throwing a backyard barbecue or a child’s birthday party. You don’t have to invite them around all the time, but every once in a while extend an invitation. This will help you get to know your neighbor better and help keep up friendly communication.

Keep Communication Open

The best way to be a good neighbor is to continue open communication. Whether it be an problem between you and a neighbor or even an issue within the community itself, having a civilized conversation will help remove issues and prevent future issues from arising.

It’s great to have a good neighbor, but it’s even better to BE a good neighbor. We hope you get to know your neighbors a little more today!
